a nonprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to the advancement of women singer-songwriters
Mission
Building on the twelve-year legacy of the famed Song Suffragettes performance series, the mission of Song Suffragettes Society is to create and promote equitable opportunities for women in music by providing underserved singer-songwriters, musicians and artists with free access to creative resources, industry expertise, career development and a community that champions their voices.
StoryHouse
Song Suffragettes StoryHouse is the physical location that embodies our Society’s mission.
Located in the heart of Nashville’s Music Row, StoryHouse provides women singer-songwriters with access to the real-world tools needed to help them thrive in their chosen career path.
Songwriting Rooms
StoryHouse has five rooms specifically set-up for songwriting sessions. So instead of women having to write in foreign spaces that can be uncomfortable and potentially unsafe, StoryHouse provides a welcoming, secure and free songwriting destination tailored for women.
Content Creation Spaces
Content creation is an unavoidable part of marketing and promoting a music career for any creator today. To help, StoryHouse provides access to spaces and equipment allowing singer-songwriters to create video and photo content for use on social media and more.
Recording Suite
StoryHouse even has a recording studio that’s available if a singer-songwriter needs a place to capture simple or more complex recordings. In concert with a contracted studio engineer, the studio has all the equipment for full mixing board productions or plug-and-play DAW files.
Educational Events
Whether a singer-songwriter is new to the music ecosystem or multiple years into her journey, ongoing education about the ever-changing entertainment business is not only valuable, it’s mandatory. For years now, we’ve been conducting free educational events with a wide variety of topics ranging from music publishing to social media to mental health and more.
Summits
Since 2016, we’ve been holding annual Song Suffragettes Summits that dive deep into specific topics relating to creatives in the music industry. Past topics have included business management, digital service providers, continuing creativity, YouTube and the general state of music. Our panels and “conversations with” have included prominent artists, business leaders and experts – all brought together to educate women singer-songwriters.
Symposiums
When a very specific topic enters the music ecosystem, Song Suffragettes Society will host a group of industry experts on that topic and let them learn from the experiences and perspectives of women creatives. For example, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) conducted a symposium at StoryHouse about AI and how it affects singer-songwriters.
Networking
Women move from all over America and the world come to Nashville to pursue their musical aspirations. With that, meeting contemporaries and potential collaborators can be invaluable; and oftentimes, a great way to make friends. So Song Suffragettes Society holds regular mixers and events that center around community and a shared passion for music and like-minded creators.
The Show
In March of 2014, Song Suffragettes launched to spotlight female songwriters, musicians and artists. Since then, Nashville's only all-women singer-songwriter show has curated a collective of over 500 of Music City's most talented women. And while music industry gatekeepers only allow women on 15% of playlists and rosters, Song Suffragettes is 100% powered by female talent of all credos, ages, backgrounds and musical genres.
With alumnae who have gone on to great career heights (Lainey Wilson, Megan Moroney, Kelsea Ballerini, Brittney Spencer, Carly Pearce, Gayle Carter Faith, Moriah, Hayes Warner and Kaitlin Butts to name a few), Song Suffragettes prides itself on being an early and perpetual champion of the next generation of successful women.
